ZIWA Rhino Sanctuary

Rhinos were completely wiped out in Uganda sometime in the late 1970’s and early 80’s due to indiscriminate hunting and poaching. In the 2005, however, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Rhino Fund and ZIWA Ranchers Limited, got together and introduced a breeding programme with the aim to at some point reintroduce the both black and the white rhino into Ugandan national parks.

The main activity at ZIWA is rhino tracking. Together with an experienced ranger you track the rhinos in their 70 km2 enclosure. By now they are used to people and not as aggressive as their cousins in the wild.

ZIWAs location between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park makes it an easy stopover and a must-do when travelling from one to the other.
